Canelo Alvarez: "Golden Boy is not the same without me"

In a recent escalation of their long-standing feud, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya exchanged legal threats. The conflict stems from past issues including a lawsuit, financial disputes, and a divisive split from De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. Addressing the issue publicly at various platforms last Wednesday, both parties have made it clear that reconciliation is not on the table.

Alvarez and De La Hoya have been entangled in disputes for years. These included accusations from Alvarez about financial mismanagement by De La Hoya and a very public breakup with Golden Boy Promotions. The tension reached new heights after a news conference where Oscar De La Hoya declared he would never mend ties with Alvarez. He stated to Boxing Scene, “I’m one to always bury a hatchet, but that ship has sailed. If there’s one person in the world that I will not bury the hatchet with, it’s probably him.”

Responding to De La Hoya's remarks in an interview with Boxing Social, Alvarez expressed his frustration and dismissed any possibility of defamation, claiming he had proof of financial mishandling by De La Hoya. He commented, “I don’t expect anything less than that with that kind of person. He’s an asshole. I don’t know, because he is mad because I leave Golden Boy. I’m the diamond in Golden Boy, Golden Boy is not the same without me, that’s why he’s angry... I have proof, I put my lawyers in, and he tried to steal money.” Alvarez emphasized his lack of interest in further confrontations unless provoked.

Despite the ongoing legal turmoil, Alvarez remains focused on his boxing career. At 33 years old and already celebrated as a four-division champion and former pound-for-pound king, he faces Jamie Munguia this weekend in Las Vegas where he will defend his super middleweight titles.
