Lomachenko: "I have always said that I am open to the fight against Davis"

Former unified lightweight champion Vasily Lomachenko still do not mind meeting with Gervonta Davis, however, I'm not sure if this feeling is mutual. Lomachenko was the only lightweight that Davis didn't even mention as a potential challenger during a press conference after his last one, when he defeated the Mexican Isaac Cruz by unanimous decision of the judges.

Lomachenko noted after his press conference on Thursday dedicated to his fight with Richard Commey on Saturday at Madison Square Garden that Floyd Mayweather, Davis's promoter, made it very clear that he had no intention of pitting Davis against him. The 33-year-old Ukrainian has become an even less attractive contender now that he no longer owns four lightweight titles, which he lost to Teofimo Lopez in October 2020.

“I always said I was open to fight [Davis], but you know boxing politics,” Lomachenko said. "You know that we have different promoters. Mayweather says every time: “Hey, we're fine, and forget about me. We make money."

Davis (26-0, 24 KOs), the 61kg WBA minor title holder, said Sunday that he is ready to fight any top lightweight in his first appearance in 2022. Lomachenko (15-2, 11 KOs), a three-division champion who has won two Olympic gold medals, still doesn't believe their meeting will ever take place.

“They only fight on Showtime, and they fight guys they think they can beat,” Lomachenko explained. "They take their fighters against opponents they think their boxers can [defeat]."

Davis, 27, is also associated with Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions and has appeared on Showtime in his last 10 bouts. His win over Cruz (22-2-1, 15 KOs) was the main pay-to-air event on Showtime.

Lomachenko is a Top Rank boxer, which has an exclusive content agreement with ESPN. The fight between Lomachenko and Kommy (30-3, 27 KOs) will be the main event of the broadcast of four fights, which is scheduled to start on Saturday night at 9 pm ET.
