Garcia downplays his father’s controversial comments about Thurman

After a heated press conference, WBC World Welterweight Champion Danny Garcia shrugged off some of the comments made by his father about WBA ruler Keith Thurman. A fired-up Angel Garcia directed racial slurs towards Thurman ahead of March 4th’s huge Welterweight unification at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, live on BoxNation.

While the remarks drew heavy criticism online, the 28-year-old was dismissive about his father and trainer’s actions, stating his brash behaviour is just a way to unnerve opponents. “At the end of the day, that’s how he is - I can’t change him. I just sit back and laugh. I’ve heard worse things from our new President [Donald Trump],” laughed Garcia.

“People like drama so that’s what we gotta bring,” he told journalists. “From the press conference to the fight, that’s what makes a big fight! He [Thurman] was definitely mad, they all get mad. They think they’re fighting him [Angel] so they’re not worried about me.”

The unbeaten Philadelphia boxer was also asked about potential match-ups in the division after the Thurman bout. Previously he has discussed a rematch with Amir Khan. “I’ve got to worry about this fight [first]. There are a lot of good fights in the Welterweight division,” said Garcia. “It’s only big names now. I can’t afford to fight a good fighter who doesn’t have a good name. I’m looking forward to fighting guys who can draw a big crowd,” he added.
